MONTEREY — After a bit of a shaky first inning, Avery Cupit settled down and pitched six straight scoreless innings as the Monterey High School Lady Wolves defeated the Glenmora High School Lady Wildcats 7-1 Thursday afternoon in an LHSAA District 5-B game.
Cupit gave up the first run of the game on a walk, an error and a fielder’s choice in the top of the first inning. She would walk three more batters after that, but struck out three batters and gave up only three hits to earn the complete-game win.
Monterey’s offense came through early in the contest with three runs each in the bottom of the first and second innings to give the Lady Wolves a 6-1 lead. They scored their final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth.
Allie Lipsey went 2-for-4 while Sarah Jane Gray and Jessica Woodrum each had a double to lead the Lady Wolves at the plate.
Monterey (9-8) finished with a 4-2 mark in district play. The Lady Wolves next play at 4 p.m. Monday at Block High School.
