FERRIDAY — The driver of a second vehicle involved in a fatal Sunday wreck on Louisiana 568 is recovering at the Rapides Regional Trauma Center, Louisiana State Police said Monday.
The accident that killed Betty Johnson, 72, of Ferriday was still under investigation late Monday afternoon, but police say they believe the accident occurred after a Dodge Journey driven by Michael W. Higgins, 28, crossed the center lane and collided head-on into Johnson’s Chevrolet Impala.
Scott Moreau, master trooper, said in a press release that Johnson was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.
Higgins, who is believed to have crossed the center lane and into Johnson’s path, has not been charged with any crime.
Toxicology tests are pending, Moreau said.
“Louisiana State Police would like to take this opportunity to remind/inform motorists that properly wearing your seat belt will dramatically reduce your chance of being injured or killed in a crash,” Moreau said in a press release.
Sunday’s is the eighth fatal crash this year for Louisiana State Police Troop E — which investigates incidents in 10 parishes including Concordia — Moreau said.
