NATCHEZ — Graveside services in memory of Delores D. “Dee” Shields, 78, who died Sunday, March 25, 2018, after a difficult illness, will be 3 p.m. today at the Dunbar Cemetery on Airport Road with the Rev. Joan Gandy officiating.

Burial will follow under the direction of Laird Funeral Home.

A celebration of Dee’s life will follow the services at Dunleith Historic Inn, 84 Homochitto St. in Natchez.

Dee was born June 8, 1939, a native of Denham Springs, La., the daughter of Attorney Erlo and Mildred Durbin. She was the oldest daughter of three children. She graduated from Denham Springs High School and went on to earn her degree in home economics at Louisiana State University.  She married Dr. Joseph Dunbar Shields III, in 1968 and moved to New York City where Joe was doing his residency.  After Joe completed his residency, they moved to Macon, Ga., where Joe started a medical practice, Internal Medicine Associates. For 30 years, they lived in Macon enjoying their family, wide circle of friends, rose and vegetable gardening, sailing and traveling together. Dee was passionate about family, flower gardens, travel, politics, literature, crossword puzzles and her Brittany Spaniels.  Dee was very active in the community and served a number of terms on the Macon City Council.  They lived in Macon until Joe retired in 1999, and then moved to live in the family home in Natchez.  After Joe’s death in 2005, Dee moved to Greenville, S.C., in 2007 and married Lou Greer in 2008.

Dee was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Dunbar Shields III.

She will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Lou Greer; her four children, Wade Shields, Marilyn Dale Shields, Caroline Shields Greatrex and Joseph Dunbar Shields IV; her loving brother, Jimmy Durbin of Denham Springs; her sister Ginger Millet of Birmingham, Ala.; and her nine grandchildren; Dee will also be fondly remembered by Lou Greer’s children, Jeffrey Greer, Chris Greer, Brian Greer and Alison Greer Stoltzfus and his six grandchildren.

Those who so desire may make donations in memory of Dee to The Friends of the Douglas Theatre Complex Inc., 355 Martin Luther King Boulevard, Macon, GA 31201.
