NATCHEZ — Tom F. Williams Memorial Stadium played host to six teams on Friday night in the Natchez High School Jamboree.

Cathedral High School, Trinity Episcopal School and Natchez High School each took on teams from outside the area in one-quarter exhibition match ups.

The jamboree served as a way to showcase several Natchez schools as well as give those schools a chance to see live game action before the start of the regular season.

Bulldogs coach Lance Reed said he was pleased with the turnout at the jamboree.

“It was exciting to see a bunch of people out,” Reed said. “It’s a fun way to start the season, a lot of people came out today, and I think everyone got some pretty good work in.”

Reed said he thinks the jamboree is a good starting point in allowing the local schools to plan similar events in the future.

“I think it’s a start to new things that should go on all the time around here,” Reed said. “I said once before, we’re one community and we should do things to help each other and make each other better.”

Reed’s team played in the final game of the jamboree against Amite County High School, a game it won 14-0.

The Bulldogs first got on the scoreboard with 11:05 left on a 9-yard touchdown pass from junior Javon Washington to sophomore Scott Turner. They scored again with 6:25 left on a Santarius Pollard 35-yard reception.

After the game, Reed said he was pleasantly surprised by the amount of hard-nosed play from his team.

“We saw some guys play a little bit more physical than (we expected),” Reed said. “We saw the physicality, and now we have to work on some execution a little better.”

Game one of the jamboree saw Cathedral pitted against Pointe Coupee Central High School. Turnovers cost the Green Wave, as they fumbled twice in route to a 14-8 loss at the hands of the Cougars.

Cougars senior quarterback Brandon Wilson scored the first touchdown for Pointe Coupee Central on a 37-yard carry with about 8 minutes left. Later in the game, Wilson scored again on a 12-yard touchdown run with 5:35 left.

The Green Wave finally got on the board with 8.7 seconds left on a Dylan White 7-yard pass to Aaron White. Cathedral made the two-point conversion on a pass from White to senior Charles Lee.

“We know we’ve got a long way to go,” Cathedral coach Greg Beesley said. “Our (defensive) line was standing straight up most of the night and our defensive backs were not breaking on the ball, but that’s some things we can work on when we get back to practice next week.”

In game two, Trinity Episcopal came out on top against Wilkinson County 29-12.

Saints senior R.J. Fleming accounted for four touchdowns, two on the ground and two in the air. Trinity coach David King had high praises for Fleming.

“That’s just God-given talent,” King said. “He sees the field as well as anybody we’ve coached.”

Fleming, however, was quick to give credit to the cast of players and coaches around him.

“Our lineman did their jobs and the coaches gave us great plays,” Fleming said. “I just want to thank God for the shape that we’re in, the hard work we’ve been putting in and stuff, because it’s really been paying off.”

Following the Trinity game, King offered complements on the jamboree as a whole.

“I’d like to congratulate Natchez High,” King said. “We’ve had a blast. Lance Reed and (Bulldogs athletic director) Fred Butcher are to be commended for having a quality jamboree.”
