The Dart: Group of young men spend Sunday working it out

NATCHEZ — Sunday might be a day of rest for many, but for one band of brothers this Sunday afternoon was about putting in work.

The Dart guided us this week to McLaurin Elementary School, which appeared to be in a lull as one might expect on a day where many succumb to slothfulness.

But on the playground, a group of five young men ranging from teens to grown men took advantage of the mild, sunny weather to get a good workout in.

One of the young men, Natchez High School senior Damorris Williams, said the group had come to the workout a bit spontaneously.

“They just texted me like, ‘We need to start working out,’” Williams said.

Williams, who plays for the Bulldogs’ baseball team, said he joined the workout session willingly despite already being in shape for the season.

He credited Jordan White for spearheading the effort. As one of the eldest of the group, White said he had no special inspiration for arranging the playground workout.

“Just to get better and get in shape,” White said.

Along with Alexander McQuarters, who will enter Natchez High next year as a freshman, and NHS graduates Ladarius Matthews and Jesse Williams, the group ran laps, did push-ups, pull-ups and a variety of other exercises using the playground equipment.

When asked to pick the best athlete of the group, White pointed to Matthews, a former NHS basketball player who graduated in 2015.

The youngster McQuarters, however, had a bone to pick with that assertion.

As White called Matthews the best athlete of the bunch, McQuarters raised his hand with a wry smile on his face, claiming to be the most athletic even at his young age.

McQuarters said he runs track and plays football, though he prefers the former to the latter.

Despite the sleepy Sunday vibe that pervaded much of Natchez, the group worked on their fitness well into the afternoon, with nothing to motivate them but each other.
