Learning to mesh: Delta Charter softball looking for right combination of leaders

Delta Charter’s Makenzie Landers is ready for one last go-around.
The Lady Storm third-baseman leads a group of five seniors on this year’s team leaning on a strong connection to pull them through the season.
“I think it really is the most important part to have a bond with your team,” Landers said. “This team is forever, and I know I’m going to remember this season forever.
“I’m really excited. I’m ready to get in the groove and see what happens.”
Darby Beach, Shelbi McManus, Haley Sharp and Bailey Yates will round out the Lady Storm seniors, each of which will have to step up vocally, coach Jeannie Beach said.
“The first thing is leadership. That obviously plays a big role,” she said. “One of our goals, even at practice, is to make sure they are constantly talking to each other. Whether it’s positive criticism or keeping someone up if they have a bad at-bat, they need to talk.”
With the experience, Delta Charter will also have a mix of younger players.
“Some of them have only played one year of ball, but they will get it,” Beach said. “They are all athletes, and I’ve been impressed with them. We have lots of talent; they just have to learn the game.”
Fundamentally, one of the biggest weaknesses so far for the Lady Storm has been timely hits, Beach said.
“Right now, the only thing that has beat us is not getting the key ones,” she said. “We have some games where we have had more hits than the other team, but we didn’t get them when we needed them.”
Additionally, Beach said her pitchers need work, though she has a plethora including Sharp, Yates and junior Sydney Watts.
“They just need to work on moving the ball,” she said. “When you get to high school, you need to be able to throw more than a fast ball and a change-up.”
Beach said though Delta Charter (1-3) has gotten off to a rough start, she isn’t worried about how things will progress.
“We have a group of some really nice girls,” she said. “They stand up for each other — kind of like big sisters. I’ve had teams in the past that have had drama, but so far, I haven’t seen that.”
Agreeing with Landers, Beach said her players need to find out how to work together.
“I see us growing, it’s just about getting them to mesh,” she said. “We have some new people — new faces, but it doesn’t matter how good your team is. If they don’t know how to play together, you’re done.”
Once things smooth out, Beach said the rest will be history.
“I’m looking forward to a good season,” she said.
Delta Charter will be back in action this weekend at the Grant Tournament.
