NATCHEZ — A Natchez man was charged Wednesday on an indictment alleging he attempted to burglarize his former employer and escape from police.

Phil Wilson Jr., 38, 156 Morgantown Road, faces charges of attempted burglary of a storehouse, felony escape and possession of burglary tools in connection to an August 2017 incident at tobacco and convenience store products distributor Corr-Williams, located at 301 Highland Blvd.

Adams County Sheriff’s Office records show that Wilson was charged Tuesday, though the circuit clerk filed the indictment on Jan. 22.

Wilson has been incarcerated since the time of his arrest on the night of the alleged burglary, spending most of that time in the Adams County Jail. He was unable to post his $75,000 bond, Adams County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Cal Green said.

After responding to an alarm late at night on Aug. 17, 2017, at Corr-Williams, officers allegedly spotted Wilson, who police identified as a former employee of the business, hiding on the building’s roof.

An officer used a truck parked alongside the facility to reach the roof and detain Wilson, police reported.

Once handcuffed and placed in a patrol car, Wilson reportedly managed to open the window of the vehicle and crawl out while officers continued to investigate the scene.

Officers then reported finding Wilson’s jacket and sweatshirt approximately 300 yards away from Corr-Williams before later finding Wilson in the parking lot of the Doctor’s Pavilion, located on Seargent S. Prentiss Drive.

Wilson reportedly had slipped out of his handcuffs and attempted to run a second time before he was finally detained again, approximately two hours after police originally responded to the burglary alarm.

Wilson remained in the county jail as of late Wednesday afternoon.
