‘It’s called unlucky’: ACCS drops playoff game to St. Al for second straight year, 3-2

Following Monday’s Adams County Christian School soccer game against St. Aloysius, Rebel coach Jim Bob Allgood asked his senior players if they had anything they wanted to say.
But, there was only silence.
The Rebels could never get enough momentum to finish multiple shots on goal, ultimately falling in the first round of the MAIS Division III Playoffs, 3-2.
“I think the seniors knew in their heart that they gave us as much as they could give,” Allgood said.
As the crickets chirped following the loss, Allgood commended the efforts of not only the seniors, but the entire team.
“I’m very proud of the whole bunch,” he said. “We had some great role models that came off the bench. I’m not going to take anything away from the valiant effort that my boys gave.”
St. Al jumped out to an early lead, as Ryan Theriot scored the first goal for the Flashes minutes into the game. ACCS quickly got back into gear as Cris Thompson and Nolan Owens broke away side by side and they slid into each other while Thompson was able to push the ball into the goal off the tip of his foot.
Thompson scored once again a few minutes later to make it a 2-1 game at halftime.
Though ACCS seemed to have the edge going into the second half, Theriot quickly tied the game after the break with his second goal.
The Rebels did have a chance to score multiple times in the second half, but Allgood said they just couldn’t catch a break. Most notably, Thompson’s numerous missed shots just inches away from hitting the back of the net.
“It was a very intense game. We had multiple opportunities, but we just didn’t finish,” Allgood said. “When we didn’t come out and score one right at the beginning of the second half, the momentum swung.
“We had shots that hit crossbars, lines, the keeper, posts and bounced out. The ball didn’t bounce our way, and it’s called unlucky. Sometimes, you’re just unlucky.”
Jack Dowe scored the third and final goal for the Flashes. This is the second consecutive year St. Al has defeated ACCS in a first-round playoff game.
Though the Rebels ended their season Monday night, they experienced the sinking emotions just one other time this season. This year’s team finished with the best overall record in school history at 19-2-2.
“We did some things this year to move our program forward,” Allgood said. “We just continue to work and get better and better.
ACCS will lose six seniors to graduation, including Thompson, Daniel Huff, Gage Dossett, Josh Hargon, Woody Proby and goalie Alex McCready.
“I’m proud of them all,” Allgood said.
