NATCHEZ — Police are investigating an alleged threat made through social media against a Cathedral School faculty member.

Natchez Police Chief Walter Armstrong said officers brought in two Cathedral High School students for questioning Friday afternoon after receiving a report of a threat of violence made via a group chat on the social media platform Snapchat.

“We have already sent a preservation request to Snapchat to try to preserve any information that might be out there,” Armstrong said.

Armstrong said the parents of the two students exercised their right to not speak to police on behalf of their children, though he hoped the two students or their parents would later be willing to cooperate.

“We are continuing our investigation without participation from the families at this time,” Armstrong said.

Cathedral School Chief Administrator Norm Yvon said he could not comment other than to confirm that police had been called Friday to the school.

A parent of one of the students reportedly involved alerted police, Armstrong said.

Though he would not go into detail, Armstrong said the alleged threat involved some sort of weapon, but said it was not a gun.

Armstrong acknowledged the tense climate pervading the country following Wednesday’s deadly shooting at a Florida high school.

Though Armstrong said there “could be nothing to” the situation at Cathedral, he said the police department would not take the situation lightly.

“And we hope that parents and citizens don’t take this lightly either,” he said. “In today’s society, threats should be taken seriously.”

Police have also made information pertaining to the case available to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Armstrong said.

Armstrong said no arrests have been made in the incident.
