Municipal court to offer chance at expunged record

NATCHEZ — The Natchez Municipal Court will soon offer those arrested for misdemeanors the opportunity for a clean record and a fresh start in life.
The court will hold an expungement clinic at 1 p.m. March 21, at which people with prior arrests made by the Natchez Police Department can have their misdemeanors — no matter the quantity — wiped off their record.
“We can pretty much expunge all misdemeanors whether it’s one, 30 or 80,” Judge Pro Tempore Anthony Heidelberg said. “What this will do in essence, if you’re applying for a job, it takes (the misdemeanors) off your record that an employer would see that would pretty much pre-disqualify you for a job.”
Though the amount of misdemeanors eligible for expungement is limitless, the conviction must have occurred prior to March 21, 2016, and only 4 charges will be allowed per petition. Each petition for expungement will cost $100 in the form of two $50 money orders.
Willing participants must also acquire their criminal record from the Natchez Police Department’s records office, which costs $10.
The charges eligible for expungement include all misdemeanors except for moving violations, felony charges later reduced to misdemeanors, and felony charges that were filed but later dismissed or remanded.
Hearings will begin on a first-come, first-served basis at 1 p.m., and Heidelberg said they would close whenever the line of petitioners dies down.
“If we have a lull at 6 or 7 p.m., we’ll shut it down,” he said.
The record is typically expunged within 45 days of the court order. Any outstanding fees or restitution must be settled before the corresponding charges can be expunged.
