NATCHEZ — An Adams County man was killed late Wednesday night and another arrested for attempted armed robbery of a residence near Emerald Mound in what authorities believe might have been a drug-related incident.
Richard A. Washington, 52, suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head after allegedly attempting to rob a secluded residence at 48 Proby Road. After Washington reportedly shot the resident in the hand, the resident returned fire and killed Washington.
Another man, Marlon Darrell Dean, 40, was charged Thursday charged with attempted armed robbery and was being held at the Adams County Jail on a $150,000 bond as of Thursday evening.
Deputies reportedly spotted Dean attempting to leave the area in his vehicle, and during a traffic stop, deputies reported finding a handgun between the driver’s seat and center console.
As the investigation unfolded, deputies discovered narcotics at the scene, prompting them to suspect drugs played a role in the shooting, said Adams County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Lt. Cal Green.
“It’s kind of shaping up into something different than just a random armed-robbery case,” Green said.
As of approximately 4:25 p.m. Thursday, Green said more arrests were pending further investigation.
Washington appeared to be wearing some sort of mask, and a small-caliber rifle reportedly was found underneath Washington when deputies found his body..
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office reportedly transferred a 911 call to Adams County dispatchers at approximately midnight Thursday, after a woman reportedly called 911 crying hysterically saying her boyfriend had been shot.
The caller also reported that a man had tried to rob the Proby Road residence.
Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten said the man who was shot in the hand did not sustain life-threatening injuries.
Further details about the case will be released as they become available, the sheriff’s office reported.
