ADAMS COUNTY — A man was killed late Wednesday night after authorities believe he attempted to burglarize a home near Emerald Mound and the resident returned fire.

Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten said an older man — who appeared to have his face wrapped with some sort of material that obscured his appearance — upon preliminary investigation seemed to have attempted to rob a secluded residence on Proby Road.

Patten said the resident was shot in the hand by the potential suspect, but the resident’s return fire proved fatal, as the suspect remained in the front yard of the residence when deputies arrived on scene.

The sheriff’s office had a call transferred from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office at approximately midnight Thursday, after a woman reportedly called 911 crying hysterically saying her boyfriend had been shot.

The caller also reported that a man had tried to rob the Proby Road residence.

Patten said the man who was shot in the hand did not sustain life-threatening injuries.

Patten also said the sheriff’s office was “temporarily holding” another suspect in custody who was on the scene surrounding the events of late Wednesday night/early Thursday morning. That suspect’s purpose for being at the scene had not been determined as of 1:30 a.m. Thursday.

Deputies continued to investigate the scene into the early hours of the day.

The deceased was not identified by law enforcement at the scene.
