LAFAYETTE, La. — Shelbi McManus scored the only goal of the match in the fifth minute as the Delta Charter School Lady Storm defeated the Opelousas Catholic School Lady Vikings 1-0 Friday night at Moore Park in the bi-district round of the 2018 LHSAA Division IV Girls’ Soccer Playoffs.

Lady Storm goalkeeper Haley Sharp did her part in preserving the win for No. 18 seed Delta Charter with 12 saves.

DCS coach Daniel Rivera praised Sharp after the match for her amazing performance.

“Haley did a phenomenal job today. She’s the reason we won today,” Rivera said. “Haley had some saves that if she didn’t make, we don’t win the game. She was one of the players of the game.”

As for McManus’ goal, Rivera said it looked clean.

“It was a really good through ball from our midfielder,” he said. “She calmed down as she got closer to their goalkeeper. She shot it at the bottom right part of the net and the goalkeeper had no chance of getting to it.”

Rivera also said that No. 15 seed Opelousas Catholic wasn’t ready for the Lady Storm’s aggressive offense as soon as the match started. He also noted that playing together and communicating well was pivotal in the win.

“We came out firing. We were applying pressure (on them) as quickly as possible,” Rivera said. “We were a unit today. When we do that, I feel like we can beat anybody.”

Delta Charter (7-11-2) will have its hands full next week when it plays at No. 2 seed Ascension Catholic in the regional round at a day and time to be determined.
