Just three days after scoring the first hat trick of his life, Adams County Christian School’s Yohan Thompson needed no reason to back away from the action. So, he did it again.

Thompson scored the Rebels’ first three goals Monday as ACCS pulled away early for a 4-2 victory over Cathedral.

“I’m just happy we got the victory,” Thompson said. “It’s nice to add it on. I’ve been getting hyped up for this game for a long time. It’s Cathedral, so I had to make sure we got it done.”

The Rebels went into the matchup needing help on their home field as they knew they would be without standout midfielder and Thompson’s brother, senior Cris Thompson due to illness.

Yohan Thompson — a sophomore — had no problem filling in. His first two goals came on free kicks resulting from handballs. The third was scored on a perfectly executed header thrown in by ACCS’ Daniel Huff.

All three goals were scored within the first 20 minutes of the game.

“It’s definitely hard not having him here,” Yohan Thompson said. “It puts a lot of pressure on us. Cris is a monster. He can take the ball all the way and just score with ease. Without that, it’s just another thing we have to take on. We take it for granted sometimes.”

Rebels coach Jim Bob Allgood said the beginning of the game was certainly something to be happy about.

“It was the best starting 20 minutes of a game my boys have played all year long,” he said. “They turned up the volume. It was magical.”

On the other hand, Cathedral had problems connecting any passes down field, leaving their chances at shots on the goal limited.

“It was not a good half for us at all,” Green Wave coach Dennis Hogue said. “There were bad decisions and wasn’t any communication. Everybody was kind of just looking at each other and we were simply out-hustled.”

Cathedral had their first chance at an open shot toward the midway point of the first half, but a miss wide left from Platini Doan left the Green Wave scoreless until Ty Bertelson was able to sneak one in just before halftime.

The Rebels and Green Wave switched roles in the second half, allowing Cathedral to move the ball more sufficiently while ACCS struggled on defense.

Huff added the final goal for the Rebels, and Bertelson scored another to end the game with two goals for Cathedral.

“We had some let downs in the second half,” Allgood said. “We kind of took our foot off the gas and had some miscommunications.”

Moving forward, ACCS (15-1-1, 9-0) keeps its district record perfect and Cathedral (5-7, 5-2) received a taste of where it needs to improve.

“If we would have just felt each other out for the first 15 minutes, we would have been fine,” Hogue said. “Everything just got rushed. It was heartbreaking because we can play better. I’ve seen us play better.”

The Green Wave continue its season Thursday when it travels to Laurel Christian.

For Thompson, he hopes to have his brother back for Wednesday’s game at Central Private.

“He’s probably going to be jealous that I’ve got two hat tricks in a row now,” he said laughing. “I know he’ll be proud though.”

The two schools will play again Monday at Cathedral.
