NATCHEZ — Trinity Episcopal football standout Tip McKenzie picked up two more offers last week from colleges vying for his athleticism.

Last week, Indiana and Kansas State offered McKenzie, who already has offers to play football at Southern Miss, Vanderbilt and Memphis.

McKenzie said he’s planning to visit Indiana the weekend of June 11. Indiana likes him at the same position all the other schools do, McKenzie said.

“They like the way I can use my speed and stuff in open space,” McKenzie said. “They want me to come in and play slot (receiver).

“Everyone likes me in the slot. I can make big plays in open space, either running or catching the ball. I pretty much do a little bit of everything.”

At Trinity, McKenzie plays both offense and defense, but McKenzie said he’d like to stick to one side of the ball in college.

“A couple of schools have asked me to play cornerback, but I prefer the offensive side of the ball,” McKenzie said.

And as for why he prefers offense, McKenzie said it’s simple.

“Everyone wants to score touchdowns,” McKenzie said. “That’s the mindset you have to have when you’re on offense.”

McKenzie competed for Team Mississippi in the Southeast Badger 7-on-7 tournament at Samford University in Birmingham, Ala., this past weekend.McKenzie scored several touchdowns, and said he graded himself well after the tournament.

“The top players in Mississippi were selected, and we played against different states such as Alabama, Florida, Tennessee and Louisiana,” McKenzie said.

“I feel like I did pretty well. I caught a lot of passes, scored a lot of touchdowns and made a lot of big plays.”

Competing in these kinds of tournaments are a good way to make a name for yourself, McKenzie said.

“Coming from a small school and a small town, coaches don’t really come out much, so you have to go to where they are,” McKenzie said. “Sometimes that’s the only way to get recognized.”

McKenzie said he’s not in a hurry to make a decision, and he will spend the next few months weighing his option.

“I’m going to wait until the end of the summer before I decide (where I’m going),” McKenzie said. “I’m going to see who all is going to offer.”
