Delta Charter School’s Peyton Roberson is a standout soccer player, but she’s also an academic powerhouse.

Roberson was recently named to the LHSAA All-Academic Composite Girls Soccer Team, a list of 77 players from the state of Louisiana to have a 4.0 GPA in their respective sport. To be eligible for the honor, one must be a senior to have played their sport for at least two years.

“From an early age, my parents always drilled into me to get good grades because they said it would help me in the long run,” Roberson said. “I never really understood why, but as I got older, it became really important to me because I knew I would have a good chance to get a lot of scholarships to go to college.”

Roberson — who plays center midfielder for the Lady Storm — has certainly got that down. Though she isn’t sure exactly how much will be covered, Roberson does know her academics will handle the majority of her tuition at the University of Louisiana Monroe.

“It’s a big relief,” she said. “I know I won’t have to pay as much, and it is definitely a big help.”

Roberson was just one of five players from LHSAA Class 1A to be named to the list, and is the first student from Delta Charter to receive the perfect-grades honor. She will have the chance to be recognized at the Division IV State Championship Game on Feb. 23 at the University of Louisiana Lafayette. Roberson said she isn’t sure if she will attend the event, but she would like to.

While her academics surely shine, Roberson is also a leader on the field.

Delta Charter soccer coach Daniel Rivera said with soccer, it’s important to have another voice to lead as it is a game without timeouts.

“You need a player out there that wants to win as bad as you do,” Rivera said. “You have to have someone who is going to keep the morale of the team in check. She has definitely played that role.”

Roberson has scored one goal so far this season, while adding seven assists. Heading into the later part of the season, the Lady Storm (5-9-1) are currently 1-0 in district play.

“We are a completely different team than last year,” Roberson said. “We work really, really hard.”

Roberson is doing her best to enjoy high school soccer while it lasts, but as graduation nears she said she is excited for life’s next step.

Roberson’s dream, she said, is to become a nurse like both of her parents.

“It’s what I grew up with and my parents have really modeled it for me,” she said. “I’m actually really excited to be learning about something that I want to learn about.”

Roberson and the Lady Storm will be back in action at 5:30 p.m. tonight as they host St. Frederick, weather permitting. Varsity boys are to follow.
