NATCHEZ — Area residents this New Year’s Eve might exercise caution while celebrating, with icy conditions expected for Sunday night heading into New Year’s Day in Adams County.

On Wednesday, the National Weather Service forecast that light rain throughout the day would transition into a wintery mix Sunday night.

National Weather Service meteorologist Marc McAllister said the area even had the potential for snow flurries.

“Going into the evening hours (Sunday), there’s a chance for light rain, which could transition to light freezing rain and maybe some snow flurries,” McAllister said.

McAllister said the combination of a storm system coming in from the west, moisture from the Gulf of Mexico and a mass of arctic air set to be in place could create the icy conditions.

“It could cause some driving conditions for Sunday night going into Monday for Adams County,” McAllister said. “Especially going over bridges and overpasses.

“It’s definitely something to look out for when people venture out on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.”

Natchez Public Works representative Joe Peoples told the city’s board of aldermen Wednesday that the department was preparing for the weather.

“We are anticipating a possible icing and snow situation for the first of January,” he said. “There will be extremely low temperatures. … public works will be available on call, and we are preparing for this event at this time.”

With still a few days to go before the holiday, McAllister said meteorologists would continue to monitor the situation leading up to New Year’s Eve.
