NATCHEZ — The multi-talented Jatavis Melton excelled in football and baseball for Natchez High, but on Wednesday the senior officially decided to continue with the latter at the next level.
Melton will join Mississippi Delta Community College Trojan baseball, signing his letter of intent with the school Wednesday afternoon in the Natchez High Auditorium.
Melton said MDCC offered him a great opportunity both in the classroom and on the field.
“I had a lot of offers, but the reason I chose Mississippi Delta — they just offer me more opportunities,” Melton said.
As a junior, Melton was named to the MHSAA Region 6-5A All-Region First Team, batting .373 on 25 hits, two home runs, three triples, four doubles and 47 stolen bases. Melton has also excelled as a pitcher for the Bulldogs.
While Melton’s athleticism stands out, what some might not know about are his entrepreneurial ambitions.
Melton plans to study business in college, and he is as confident about one day starting an endeavor of his own as he is in his athletic abilities.
“When I make it to the big leagues, I want to open up a new business,” Melton said.
Though he does not know yet what that business would be, Melton said he would use the coming years to figure it out.
Melton said the Wednesday marked a big moment for both him and his loved ones.
“I just want to make it and strive for my family,” Melton said. “I just want to be great.”
