NATCHEZ — The Natchez Police Department has located a van that the department will use to transport city inmates to the county jail, which would allow the completion of a planned consolidation of the two jails.
The city and county agreed to the consolidation in October in an attempt to save money, but NPD has been searching for a vehicle to physically transport the inmates.
“We need this vehicle to get the jail consolidation started,” Natchez Police Capt. Tom McGehee said at Tuesday’s regular Natchez Board of Aldermen meeting.
The van — a 2014 Ford F-350 with approximately 58,000 miles of use — will require approximately $20,000 to purchase, McGehee said.
City Clerk Megan Edmonds said she would begin seeking quotes to finance the van.
