NATCHEZ — Production of a new movie involving some of the same executives behind “Get on Up” is set to take place in Natchez beginning in January, Natchez Mayor Darryl Grennell announced Tuesday.
Grennell said the movie would not be as high-budgeted a production as “Get on Up,” which began filming in 2013 in Natchez. This new movie, however, would still provide jobs for locals and help stimulate the economy, Grennell said.
“It’s good news for the city,” Grennell said.
Comparing the film to another low-budget film, Grennell mentioned the movie “Get Out,” which achieved both box-office success and critical acclaim.
Grennell said this movie would be similar to “Get Out” in terms of genre.
Grennell said the crew would begin pre-production as early as Dec. 18, and the filming for the movie would be done primarily in Natchez.
The name of the movie was not released, though Grennell said it would star Octavia Spencer, whose filmography includes acclaimed films such as “The Help” (2011), “Fruitvale Station” (2013) and “Gifted” (2017).
Earlier that day, Grennell met with producer John Norris, from whom Grennell is expecting to receive the movie’s script soon. Tate Taylor, who directed “Get on Up,” is also working on the new movie, Grennell said.
The upstairs of the City Council Chambers will serve as the film crew’s main office in Natchez.
