NATCHEZ — An Adams County man died Sunday night when his mobile home caught fire.
Adams County Coroner James Lee pronounced the man dead at 10:27 p.m., and at 11:15 p.m. Lee released the identity of the man as Jimmie Wayne Polk, 61.
“This was a terrible tragedy, and my heart goes out to this family,” Lee said.
Lee said the preliminary manner of death is accidental.
The mobile home was located on Canvas Back Court in the Cranfield community.
Firefighters from the Kingston Volunteer Fire Station, Liberty Road and Lake Montrose volunteer fire stations and the Natchez Fire Department all responded to the fire.
Fire crews reported the residence was engulfed by fire when they arrived at approximately 9 p.m.
Firefighters worked to free the man from the burning residence, but to no avail.
Details about the cause of the fire have yet to be determined.
“It’s still under investigation, so we really can’t give any information out,” Adams County Fire Coordinator Darryl Smith said.
Lee said the exact cause of death is pending an autopsy, though Polk likely suffered a heart and lung condition from the fire.
“It’s very sad for the family and community to lose someone this way,” Lee said.
Lee said he was still collecting information as of 11:15 p.m.
