NATCHEZ — Darren Smith, a Natchez High School 10th grader who has played his violin in the Sydney Opera House in Australia and in Carnegie Hall in New York, will pick up the bow again this week for a statewide broadcast.

Smith, who has only played violin for four years, will play a selection of music live on WLBT’s Midday Mississippi Show at 12:30 p.m., Tuesday.

The teenager applied and was accepted to play in Carnegie Hall as a part of the High School Honors Performance Series first in 2016, when he was just a freshman.

Over the summer, Smith played for international hosts at the Sydney Opera House in Australia.

Just this month, Smith got the news that he would return in summer 2018 to play again in Australia.

Delphine Brent, Smith’s mother, received the email confirmation for his return to Sydney.

Smith said Brent immediately sent him a message in all capital letters, notifying and congratulating him for being chosen.

Students are chosen from more than 44 American states as well as from multiple foreign countries.

Along with his daily practice at home between school and homework, Smith also plays with the Mississippi Youth Symphony Orchestra in Jackson.

Smith’s performance on Midday Mississippi will be recorded and posted on msnewsnow.com after the show.
