Any schoolteacher will tell you that students take better care of their own property than they do that of the school.

Apparently, adults aren’t much better.

Taxpayer-funded county workers have been letting taxpayer-bought vehicles slowly fall apart.

Broken taillights, broken brakes and general disrepair plague many county vehicles, the Adams County Board of Supervisors learned Monday.

In fact, none of the nine vehicles inspected by an outside company would have passed the state’s inspection sticker test.

That means our local government has been driving illegal trucks.

The problems are many, it seems, but the supervisors took action Monday that should correct the issues.

The board voted to require daily inspections of each county vehicle. They are working to finalize a daily checklist to use as the standard for inspections.

We are glad the supervisors are taking quick action on this matter and hope the inspections can be in place by the end of the month.

And, as with anything, follow-up is the key.

The supervisors must enact a procedure for department heads to, well, check the checklist.

The county workers responsible for allowing such disrepair need to learn to mess with their own stuff, not ours.
