NATCHEZ — Natural gas service to approximately 150 residences in the Kingston community failed Thursday night after the regulator on a truck providing gas to the area froze, blocking gas from the line.

District 2 Supervisor David Carter said four employees were on the site at approximately 10 p.m. Thursday to assess the situation.

Each customer in the area will have their gas turned off individually, Carter said, before the line can be refilled.

Carter said he expected the gas provider to be fully functional by Friday morning.

“We are very sorry for this unforeseen circumstance,” Carter said. “We don’t foresee this happening again.”

The gas line extending from the Kingston area to Cloverdale, Carter said, was built nearly 90 years ago and only expected to last 40 years.

The line completely failed and was abandoned last week by American Midstream. The company arranged for two tanks to provide gas to Kingston customers while a permanent solution was put in place.

Those two trucks, which were parked at the Old Kingston Store, failed Thursday night, leaving the 152 residences without gas.

The loss of pressure was first reported at 8 p.m. Thursday.

Carter said the permanent solution is near completion, pending inspection of 15 to 20 homes in the area.

Until these houses have been inspected by Delta Fuel, a large Pinnacle Propane tank that has been installed and will provide fuel for the Kingston area cannot be used.

The inspection is free to homeowners, Carter said, and asked anyone who had not yet had their house evaluated to call Delta Fuel.

Carter said the gas line connecting Natchez to Baton Rouge is currently being rerouted, and that Kingston is one of the last areas which require an alternate provider.
