VIDALIA — The Concordia Parish Police Jury announced Monday night the renewal of a 1-percent sales tax to begin on Feb. 1.
Voters elected to renew the sales tax in a special election on Oct. 14 by a margin of 91 votes. The official election count, which the jury made public Monday, showed a total 412 votes in favor of the tax and 321 opposing.
The sales tax must be renewed every 15 years and will be in effect until 2033.
The tax is expected to draw in approximately $946,000 annually, the proceeds of which will be used to fund the parish’s waste disposal program.
If funds are left over after the needs of waste disposal have been met, those monies will be used on the repair and creation of roads and drainage systems.
The tax affects all sales within the parish except those made within the boundaries of the towns of Ferriday or Vidalia.
The police jury announced a public meeting on 6 p.m. on Jan. 8, wherein board members may officially adopt the ordinance.
