On Tuesday Adams County residents will go to the polls to do something many around the world are unable to do — vote.  As we put into action this cornerstone of democracy, let us remember some of the good news from last week: 

• A small group of Natchez Festival of Music supporters gathered around a bonfire last week to celebrate the end of debt for the local festival. In 2000, the Natchez Opera Festival took out a loan to keep the annual music event afloat. Since then, the organization has changed its name and broadened its scope. With the help of director Jay Dean, the festival has created an event that appeals to a wide variety of music lovers, and as a result has attracted a more diverse fan base which has improved the financial position of the group. Congratulations to the Natchez Festival of Music for its achievement, one few arts organizations accomplish.
• Hayes Daly dreams of soaring high above the clouds in an U.S. Air Force fighter jet. Before he does, the Cathedral junior knows he must first soar in the classroom with high grades and other accomplishments. Daly is well on his way, making a 34 on the ACT on the first try and making all As in the classroom. He is also getting leadership training as the junior class president and the vice president of his church youth group. With his attitude and accomplishments, we know Daly is well on his way to reaching whatever goals he sets for himself.
• Natchez-Adams School District officials recently unveiled statistics showing the number of discipline actions in the district are dropping and attendance numbers are improving. Looking at the first two months of the school year, district officials say they are encouraged by the marked improvement. We hope the numbers continue to improve over the rest of the school year.
