NATCHEZ — The Trinity Episcopal baseball team set the tone for its second round playoff match up against Riverfield very emphatically Tuesday night with a 19-0 win over the Raiders.

The Saints jumped on top 11-0 after just one inning of play and cruised to a 1-0 series lead behind a dominant offense and great pitching from starter Jake Winston.

“(We) played very well (tonight), there is not a lot of bad (that) came out of tonight,” Saints coach Mitch Ashmore said.

“Jake (Winston) had an outstanding night, he looked really sharp. Anytime Jake works quick he’s tough, and he had command, which is the biggest thing. (I was) very proud of his effort.”

Winston threw a complete-game for Trinity, missing a no-hitter by the narrowest of margins. The only hit he gave up was a cue-shot off the end of Drew Horne’s bat that found a way to avoid all the Saints defenders. Winston struck out 12 Riverfield batters and did not walk any. He allowed just three base runners, one reached on an error and another on a strike out that got away from catcher Chase Patrick.

Horne started the game for Riverfield but the Saints chased him out of the game after just two-thirds of an inning. Trinity put up seven runs on two hits and four walks on Horne, before adding another four on reliever Trey Presley in the first.

Trinity capped off the first inning scoring with a two-run home run by Winston, followed by a solo shot by Givonni Dent.

Trinity would add three more runs in the second, the first coming off a leadoff home run by Scott Turner. The Saints then scored two in the third and three in the fourth to run away with a 19-run win.

Andrew Moroney, Trevor Faust and Dent all had three runs. Daniel Dunaway Winston, Faust and Turner all had two RBIs.

The Saints will take their one-game advantage to Rayville, La. to play game two of the series at 5 p.m. Thursday against Riverfield.

“It really is (nice to) win one at home,” Ashmore said. “(Now we) have to put it behind us and try to go there Thursday and (win the series).”

Trinity’s win Tuesday gives them a 20-3 overall record on the season; they are 3-0 in the playoffs.
