When it comes time for Copiah-Lincoln Community College to play its baseball series with Southwest Mississippi in spring 2019, Jacob McDaniel and Josh Day said they might just have to let out a little laugh.

On Thursday afternoon, the Adams County Christian School duo became rivals while cementing their opportunity to play at the next level — McDaniel inking his National Letter of Intent to Southwest, while Day signing his to Co-Lin.

“I chose first, so it’s his fault,” McDaniel said. “We have played against each other during other things, even down to Dixie Youth baseball. Now we are at the same school playing with each other, but we will be going back soon.”

Still Rebels for now, Day said he isn’t sure what to expect when he sees McDaniel across the field during a college game, yet hopes to enjoy the reunion.

“It’s going to be pretty funny,” he said. “I was thinking about going to Southwest, but I changed. I just knew more about Co-Lin and I know the coaches well.”

Day’s brother, Christian, is a sophomore this year at Co-Lin, and he said it’s been beneficial to see how the experience has worked out.

“He’s got a bunch of offers now (to transfer to a four-year university),” Day said. “When I visited, everyone was upfront and they know the game. I feel like they can really prepare me.”

McDaniel said the decision to go to Southwest — where he is expected to play in the infield — was also about logistics, including his desire to become a veterinarian.

“I spoke to the coaches and it sounded like a good fit,” he said. “I liked the atmosphere and the school. They have a good pre-vet program, so it just seemed right for me.”

Day plans to study either mechanical or electrical engineering, while playing at the utility position as a pitcher and infielder.

“I’m ready to experience college life and the college level of baseball,” he said. “I hope it’s fun being out on my own.”

With the future ahead for both, McDaniel said he is equally as excited.

“It is sure to be a new experience, but it’s going to be exciting,” he said. “It might be a little bit challenging, but I’m ready for it.”
