NATCHEZ — Port Gibson, Lorman and Fayette lost power for approximately 24 hours after a transmission line failed Friday.

Entergy Customer Service Manager Tim Runnels said a guy wire on one of their transmission structures in Washington on U.S. 61 North was hit at approximately 2:45 p.m. Friday, breaking two poles on the structure. Runnels said he did not know what hit the guy wire.

Runnels said the outage affected 2,450 Entergy customers in parts of Claiborne and Jefferson counties, including Fayette. Entergy provides electricity to Southwest Electric, which then distributes electrical power to other areas of Jefferson and Claiborne counties.

Runnels and Deb McGee, public relations coordinator for Southwest Mississippi Electric, said the repair was complicated by storms Friday night, and that linemen worked through the night trying to repair the downed poles.

Rugged terrain and mud, McGee said necessitated special equipment in fixing the outage, which caused further delays.

“It was an ordeal,” Runnels said.

The power returned at approximately 1 p.m. Saturday.

“It’s come back on and we are so happy,” McGee said.

Southwest Electric is an electric cooperative based in Lorman and provides power to more than 25,000 meters in nine counties.
