NATCHEZ — Police Friday arrested a second man allegedly involved in a late September shooting incident that wounded two people, one being the other suspect.

Natchez Police Chief Walter Armstrong said officers arrested Ernest Murphy on two counts aggravated assault after Murphy allegedly wounded Devonte Perry — arrested Thursday in connection with the shooting — and a 29-year-old female.

As of Friday afternoon, Murphy was being held on a $600,000 bond, Armstrong said.

Armstrong said Perry was being held on a $750,000 bond.

Natchez Police Capt. Scott Frye said Murphy is the stepfather of a 15-year-old boy whom Perry allegedly threatened with a weapon the evening of Sept. 28.

The incident reportedly stemmed from a dispute between Perry and the boy over a basketball game played at a park near River Terminal Road. Officers responded to reports of a shooting at approximately 7:45 p.m. at 105 Lewis Drive.

Police believe Murphy drove up to the scene in his Jeep when Perry fired a gunshot into the vehicle.

Murphy then allegedly returned fire with approximately three rounds from a shotgun, striking both Perry and the 29-year-old woman, a bystander.

Perry and the woman were transported to a Jackson hospital for treatment, though Armstrong said both suffered relatively minor injuries.

Armstrong said Thursday Murphy would be charged once apprehended, though at the time Armstrong identified Murphy only as the stepfather of the allegedly threatened boy.
