NATCHEZ — Police Wednesday arrested a Natchez man who allegedly threatened a 15-year-old boy with a weapon and later became involved in a shooting.

Natchez Police Chief Walter Armstrong said officers arrested Devonte Perry, 25, on a charge of three counts aggravated assault manifesting extreme indifference to human life.

The Sept. 28 incident that led to Perry’s arrest allegedly involved a conflict between Perry and 15-year-old over a basketball game at a park off River Terminal Road, authorities said.

Police at approximately 7:45 p.m. that day responded to reports of a shooting at 105 Lewis Drive.

After Perry reportedly threatened to harm the boy with a weapon, the boy told his mother about the incident, and eventually one of the boy’s relatives came to the scene, Armstrong said.

Though police at the time thought the relative to be the boy’s uncle, Armstrong said upon further investigation they have come to identify the man as the boy’s stepfather.

Police believe at that time the stepfather and Perry became involved in a shootout, with Perry allegedly firing into the stepfather’s Jeep.

The stepfather then allegedly returned fire with approximately three shotgun blasts. Perry and a 25-year-old woman suffered shotgun wounds and were transported to a Jackson hospital to receive medical treatment. Armstrong said both parties suffered relatively minor injuries.

Armstrong did not release the stepfather’s name but said police intend to charge the man for the incident.

Armstrong said officers had to interview the woman, who appeared to be an innocent bystander, before proceeding to arrest Perry.

The case remains under investigation.
