Just when it looked like Franklin County High School was finally going to pick up its first win of the year, Port Gibson High School made sure that would not happen.

D’Marious Hicks had a touchdown pass and his 15-yard touchdown run with 8:35 to go in the fourth quarter allowed the Blue Waves to take a hard-fought 14-13 win over the Bulldogs Friday night to stay undefeated in MHSAA Region 7-3A.

Franklin County (0-9, 0-3) jumped out to a 13-0 lead in the second quarter on Ja’quaveon Anderson’s 15-yard run with 10:46 left and Jaquan Brown’s 10-yard run with 1:08 remaining until halftime. But Spencer Romero was just 1-for-2 on extra points, and that gave Port Gibson (6-2, 2-0) the opening it needed.

Hicks threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Jacory Rankin and the two connected on the ensuing 2-point conversion run to make it a 13-8 game with 3:42 to go in the third quarter. Hicks’ rushing touchdown came with 8:35 left in the game.

Franklin County had more first downs (10 to 8), out-gained Port Gibson in total yards 198 to 154 and had fewer penalties than the Port Gibson. But the Bulldogs’ offense bogged down too many times in the second half.

Brown went 3-for-8 passing for 57 yards to go with 20 carries for 49 yards. Dominique White led the Bulldogs’ defense with 15 tackles while Cameron Young had eight tackles and two sacks.

Franklin County is off next week before closing out the season at Jefferson County on Friday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m.
