The 2017 Beau Pré Cup Championship kicked off Saturday with two rounds of matches, resulting in a close contest by the end of the afternoon.
Team Carnoustie — led by captain Michael Blain — leads Team St. Andrews by just one point at the end of the first day, 7.5-6.5.
Carnoustie had a strong lead after the morning’s four-ball matches, winning five of the seven matches outright for a total of 5.5 points.
“We did phenomenal,” Blain said. “We had a good lead.”
Trailing with just 1.5 points, St. Andrews — led by captain Keith Rayborn — won its final three matches of the afternoon’s alternate shot round to make its comeback.
Today, each team’s individual members will matchup one-on-one for a chance at 14 points.
Tee times begin at 10 a.m.
“It’s big to have a one point difference now,” Rayborn said. “It could go any way. We are going to see how it rolls out.”
With the slight edge, Blain said he has faith in his team.
“Hopefully we put it to them,” he said.
