NATCHEZ — Police said two people suffered shotgun wounds Thursday night near Susie B. West Apartments in a dispute that reportedly arose due to a basketball game.

Natchez Police Department Capt. Scott Frye said no arrests have been made and the two individuals, one male and one female, were transported to a Jackson hospital for medical treatment. Frye said police do not know the status of the individuals, nor where they were hit by the gunfire.

Reports came in Thursday at approximately 7:45 p.m. of a shooting at 105 Lewis Drive, Frye said.

Frye said the male whom was shot, Devonte Perry, 25, was part of a group that was playing basketball at a park off River Terminal Road leading up to the shooting.

Perry allegedly threatened to harm a 15-year-old boy with a weapon, though Frye said to his understanding Perry did not brandish a weapon at that time.

After the alleged threat, the boy went to tell his mother about the incident, Frye said.

Afterward, Frye said police believe the boy contacted his uncle, and a man believed to be the boy’s uncle drove up to the scene in his Jeep. Perry then reportedly fired a gunshot into the vehicle.

Then, someone returned fire with three shotgun blasts, which struck Perry. Frye said the return fire came from the direction of the Jeep, but police are still trying to determine who else exactly was involved in the shooting.

Frye said a 29-year-old female was also struck in the process. Though police are still investigating how she was hit, Frye said she is believed to be an innocent bystander.

Frye said the ongoing investigation is “very complex’ and encouraged anyone with information to contact Natchez police.

Police chief Walter Armstrong, who had just Tuesday spoken publicly about the city’s need to clamp down on gun violence, called this incident “a sad occasion — so sad.”

“Everyone wants to use guns to settle their differences,” Armstrong said.

Frye could not elaborate further on the investigation other than that the department has “some good leads.”
