Members of the Adams County Christian School Lady Rebels didn’t look worried as Kaci Guedon fell to her knees Tuesday afternoon, instead they cheered.
Midway through the second half of its matchup with Cathedral, underneath Guedon’s tightly curled body was a soccer ball she had saved just inches from the goal line. The senior goalkeeper ended with 15 saves, aiding her team to a 1-0 victory over the Lady Green Wave.
“It feels great,” Guedon said. “They were on us the whole time. They really should have made more shots. I lost my breath a few times because it was so close.”
ACCS scored its goal midway through the first half as Rearanna Mayberry swept one across into the back right corner of the net. Jadyn Biglane offered the assist.
Besides the only score, ACCS utilized its defense to hold on.
“Knowing how good their bunch is at coming from being down, we had to try to score more goals,” ACCS coach Jim Bob Allgood said. “Kaci is my player of the game. At any moment, they could have come back, but she had multiple saves on the same goal from post to post. It’s really the extra heart and soul that she has put in since sixth or seventh grade.”
Cathedral dominated the offensive attempts on the night, but had trouble converting its opportunities.
The Lady Green Wave ended with 16 shots on the goal, led by Alex Pearson with five.
“We could not get it going,” Cathedral coach Dennis Hogue said. “(ACCS) won everything at midfield, but we did have some nice passing and crossing.”
Hogue said the falter was largely due to effort.
“This is the most difficult game we play, because (ACCS) never runs out of gas,” he said. “I told them they had to match that intensity, but we didn’t.”
Hogue also said Guedon saved the Lady Rebels’ spirits.
“She was the MVP,” he said. “We had a lot of shots on goals that I thought could be the one.”
With the win, Allgood said the Lady Rebels received a boost in confidence.
Cathedral is currently ranked No. 1 in the district after its two season wins over powerhouse Laurel Christian.
“We have had some great moments, but it was the most beautiful 80 minutes we have played all year,” Allgood said. “For us to get this victory tonight means a ton to a bunch of young soccer players at Adams Christian. I’m super proud of my ladies.”
Guedon was happy, too.
“We beat Cathedral,” she said. “That’s what I wanted.”
ACCS will play again today as it hosts River Oaks at 3:30 p.m., while Cathedral will be back in action at 5:30 p.m. Thursday when it travels to Brookhaven Academy.
