VIDALIA — Vidalia doesn’t intend to put all its baseballs on one diamond.

While the city works toward the construction of a new recreation complex on U.S. 84, leaders are simultaneously planning an upgrade of existing courts and fields near Vidalia Junior High School.

No timetable has been set, but District 1 alderman Triand “Tron” McCoy said the Gillespie Street park won’t be overlooked.

“We want any kid or adult in the city to have access to good, safe recreation facilities,” he said.

McCoy said Vidalia officials originally thought the recreation area, that includes basketball courts, tennis courts and baseball and softball fields, was owned by the city’s recreation board, but later found out it was owned by the school district.

“The city is proposing that we partner with the school and recreation boards to do a major overhaul of the area,” he said. “We want to be able to utilize these facilities as best as we can.”

Currently the area sees little use, McCoy said, but he’s hopeful a renovation would change that.

“Everything will be 100 percent new and improved if we can get this project started,” he said. “If we can keep these kids active and let them play with the Xbox and Playstation a little less and get some real exercise, it will be very beneficial,” he said. “I think that everybody should have an opportunity to play as hard as they work.”

McCoy also said having more recreation options in the city is also a way to keep children and teenagers out of trouble by giving them something to do.

“I always used to hear that an idle mind is the devil’s workshop,” he said.

McCoy said that while the project is in talks, a lot more work has to be done before any final decisions on the project are made.

“This just hasn’t been discussed enough with all the parties involved,” he said. “We are going to continue to work on the plans.”
