Fall begins with week of good news

As we head into the first week of the Natchez fall tourism season, let us take a look at some of last week’s good news:

  • When Matthew Pearson donated his grandfather’s Korean War uniform to the Mississippi Department of Archives and History Thursday, Pearson said he was both happy and sad — sad to see a part of his grandfather’s life go, but happy that the uniform will be preserved for generations to see. Pearson and his family decided to donate the uniform after learning MDAH sought a Korean War-era uniform for display in the state’s new history museum in Jackson. The history museum and a civil rights museum will open on Dec. 9. Thanks to the Pearson family for donating this uniform for future generations to see.
  • Last week Trinity Episcopal Day School teacher and baseball coach, Moises Rodriguez did one thing many immigrants to the United States dream about doing — he became a naturalized U.S. citizen. Thirteen years ago, Rodriguez came to America to play baseball with the Florida Marlins. Since then, he has worked in Iowa, Mississippi, Texas and Indiana, meeting his wife Blair along the way. Now married, the couple has two children and has returned to Mississippi to be close to Blair’s family. With hard work and determination, Rodriguez has accomplished the aspirations of many immigrants to America. Congratulations to Rodriguez and welcome home.
  • A busy campus is good news for the Natchez campus of Copiah-Lincoln Community College. In recent months, school administrators have been forced to get creative when finding space for the increase in students. This year, enrollment has grown by 163 students — from 588 students in 2016 to 751 students in 2017. To make class schedules work, Co-Lin Natchez Vice President Teresa Busby and her staff have depended heavily on afternoon and hybrid classes, which are taken both on campus and online. Thanks to all who continue to make the Co-Lin a success for the community.

Let us remember thank those who continue to make our community great.
