Ferriday starts slow, wins over Rayville, 24-0

Led by Jerrius Scott, the running game of the Ferriday High School Trojans racked up more than 250 yards and accounted for two touchdowns as it defeated the Rayville Hornets 24-0 Friday night in the LHSAA District 2-2A opener for both teams.
Scott finished with 21 carries for 198 yards and one touchdown. Byron Milligan added a touchdown run, and quarterback Kobe Dillon had 10 carries for 50 yards.
But, there was one thing that Ferriday head coach Stanley Smith was not too thrilled with.
“We came out not starting like I wanted us to. The execution was not there,” Smith said.
Even though the Trojans entered the game as the No. 1 team in this week’s Class 2A power ratings while Rayville was No. 29, the Hornets hung tough for the first three quarters.
Ferriday was only up 8-0 at halftime and it remained that way until the Trojans scored 16 points in the fourth quarter.
“We believe in conditioning. That’s a by-product of finishing strong in the fourth quarter,” Smith said.
Dillon also added a 27-yard touchdown pass to Dantrieze Scott.
Ferriday’s defense did its part in preserving the shutout of Rayville (0-4, 0-1). Lewis Matthews had a team-high eight tackles. Scott had seven tackles, four tackles for loss and three sacks. Dare Rosenthal had six tackles, three tackles for loss and three sacks.
“We have a tradition here called the ‘Junkyard Dog’ defense,” Smith said. “Hopefully, we’ll continue to use that as motivation.”
Ferriday (4-0, 1-0) travels to Lake Providence, La., to take on General Trass next Friday.
