PINEVILLE, La. — Dillon Johnson didn’t have many rushing yards, but his two touchdown runs were big enough in Adams County Christian School’s second-half comeback as the Rebels defeated CENLA Christian Academy 41-18 Friday night.
ACCS trailed CENLA Christian 18-13 at halftime after the Lions scored two touchdowns in the second quarter to rally from a 13-6 deficit. One of those scores was on a 75-yard kickoff return by Reagan Lane.
“They have a returner who is similar to Bryce Murray. We had him trapped. He broke a tackle and broke loose,” ACCS head coach Paul Hayles said. “We turned the tables when Bryce nearly broke on and took it to their 39. It gave the momentum back to us.”
After CENLA Christian took a 6-0 lead on a 17-yard touchdown run by Derrick Thomas midway through the first quarter, ACCS responded with a 14-yard run by Christopher Perry and an 8-yard touchdown run by Brandon Sanders in the second quarter to take the lead.
As for what was the key to ACCS’s second-half rally in which the Rebels scored 28 points while keeping the Lions shut out, Hayles said, “Physicality. We had a lot of intensity. Kids began to execute. This group worked hard and they want success.”
Sanders led the Rebels with 18 carries for 145 yards and two touchdowns, the second of which was a 1-yard run in the third quarter that started their amazing comeback. Johnson had five carries for 15 yards and Rusty Blackwell had 12 carries for 58 yards and one touchdown. The Rebels had 326 total rushing yards in the game.
“We were able to figure out some things they were doing,” Hayles said. “I was pleased with the blocking in the second half. The backs ran hard all game.”
