After tasting a loss for the first time since last season, Natchez High School football coach Roy Rigsby said his team was faced with a decision — yet was able to make the right one.

“They were not down, and they were not bitter. They made the right choice to get better,” Rigbsy said.

The Bulldogs (4-1) fell to Jefferson Davis County last Friday, 48-35, after a five-touchdown third quarter left them in a tight spot.

“We acknowledge that we could have won that game, and they came with the attitude this week that they need to clean it up,” Rigbsy said. “It’s definitely not something we accept wholeheartedly as a part of us, but we did accept what happened.”

This week, the Bulldogs will attempt to rebound at 7 p.m. tonight as they host Wingfield for their district opener.

Despite last week’s loss, Rigsby said he is excited to expand on the positives.

“A lot of the times when you lose and go back to look at the film, if you’re not careful you can overlook the good that happened,” he said. “The best thing I saw last week was the maturity of my quarterback (Chris Scott). They were an attack defense, and he got banged around pretty good. Never once did he argue with them, or never once did he say anything negative toward them. He constantly kept that competitive edge.”

Last week, Scott ended going 15-for-28 passing with 300 yards and four touchdowns.

While Rigsby said he is thankful for his own talent at the quarterback position, he said Wingfield (1-3) presents its own special athlete in the spot.

“They have a dynamic quarterback,” he said. “He’s elusive and athletic — a playmaker. When I see film on him, he is something.”

Rigsby said he is also eager to simply keep the season going, especially at home this week.

“We are excited to show the city of Natchez that we are special,” he said.
