With a victory over LaGrange last week, Ferriday High School is undefeated — winning three games all to teams in higher classifications.
Currently ranked No. 1 in LHSAA Class 2A, the Trojans will open its district schedule at 7 p.m. Friday as they host Rayville.
Though Ferriday coach Stanley Smith said it will be nice to play a team in its own classification, Rayville is not to be taken lightly.
“We have a tough district, so the record is now 0-0,” he said. “I don’t think it is a step down. Rayville has a lot of good athletes and a couple of Division I athletes. Even though the playing field is equaled out a little bit, there are talented players everywhere.”
Ferriday’s win last week was a close one, edging out Class 5A LaGrange, 14-13.
Smith said while he was happy with the win, he still sees room for improvement.
“We didn’t execute like I was hoping we would. We came back into practice this week looking to be perfect,” he said. “We just have to have the mindset that we need to come to work.”
Last week’s win was shaped by the Trojan defense, led by Lewis Matthews who had eight tackles, one for a loss, one forced fumble and two defended passes.
Dantrieze Scott added to the efforts with a 25-yard interception return for a touchdown.
“The defense is the tone setter,” Smith said. “We have a lot of returners from last year. If we can be aggressive and play sound defense, I think we will be good. The athletic ability is there, we just need to be more consentient.”
