VIDALIA — The Concordia Parish Narcotics Task Force arrested six people Tuesday on drug charges as a part of a parish-wide roundup.

  • Candice L. Baxter, 27, 280 Moose Lodge Road, was arrested on charges of possession of a schedule II drug, convicted felon in possession of a firearm, carrying weapons and possession of a controlled dangerous substance. Baxter’s bond was set at $75,000.
  • Anthony Shane Geoghegan, 43, 1216 Peach St., was arrested on a charge of schedule IV drugs. No bond was set Wednesday for Geoghegan.
  • Stephen R. Hinton, 36, 702 Virginia Ave., was arrested on a charge of possession of schedule II drugs. Hinton’s bond was set at $10,000.
  • John P. Lushute, 40, 4752 Louisiana 569, was arrested on a probation and parole hold-violation. No bond was set for Lushute.
  • Melinda L. Tarver, 45, 1216 Peach St., was arrested on charges of possession of a schedule II drug, possession of drug paraphernalia and a probation and parole hold-violation. Bond was set at $750 for Tarver.
  • Savanna W. Townsley, 33, 1687 Louisiana 927, was arrested on a probation and parole hold-violation. No bond was set for Townsley.

CPSO Chief Deputy David K. Hedrick Jr. said three of the arrests were incidental, meaning the subjects were not the subject of a warrant but were found in possession of a controlled substance during another operation by deputies.

Hedrick said the arrests were made by four officers from the Ferriday Police Department, Vidalia Police Department and the Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Office.

The United States Drug Enforcement Agency categorizes drugs by schedule, with the commonly abused and dependence-inducing substances falling into schedule I and the least likely to cause dependence in schedule V.

At least once a month, Hedrick said, the narcotics unit collects unserved warrants — often due to a problem in finding the subject — and works “more diligently” to locate the individuals for the warrants.

“We do make narcotics arrests daily,” Hedrick said. “These are just some that have built up and they couldn’t find them. So we go out and try to find them specifically.”

Though the office makes arrests for drug violations often, Hedrick said the level of drug use in Concoridia Parish is comparable to that of other parishes and counties in America.

“The Sherrif’s office is going to continue to take a strong stance against drugs,” Hedrick said. “Though we know you will never completely get rid of drugs in a community, we still combat them daily. We will continue to pursue persons who use illegal narcotics.”
