Professional golf tour coming to Natchez

For more than 20 years, several professional golf tours have made stops in Natchez, whether it be the old Belwood Country Club or Beau Pré Country Club.

This week, another pro tour will be added to that list as the Adams Pro Tour makes it way to Beau Pré, culminating in a four-day tournament that starts on Wednesday and ends on Saturday.

“This will be the first year for the APT. In years past, we’ve hosted a professional tour going back to the mid-90s,” local tournament chairman Woody Allen said. “We’ve hosted eight or nine times. It’s the same level that we’ve had in the past.”

Among those who have won here and went on to play at the PGA Tour include Joe Durant, former PGA Champion Craig Perks, and Charlie Rymer, who not only won on that tour, but is now seen quite often on the Golf Channel.

As for the excitement level of hosting this particular tour as well as the caliber of players, Allen said not to surprised if a few eventually make the PGA Tour.

“We’re having 115 young professionals play. They are all professional golfers. Most of them are just getting started,” he said. “They’re working their way to get there.”

Fans will not only be treated to four days of what Allen said will be “some really good golf,” but also fun events leading up to it.

“We’re going to have a long drive contest (and a Pro-Am) on Tuesday. A shootout with one amateur and one pro that will go nine holes. Wednesday through Saturday will be just professional golf. No charge to watch them,” he said.

Monday’s Pro-One Am team shootout starts at 2 p.m., and Allen added that the rest of the day will be practice rounds.

On Tuesday, the long drive contest starts at 1 p.m., followed by the Pro-Am.

Then the first round on Wednesday and the second round on Thursday will have tee times on No. 1 and No. 10 starting at 7:30 a.m.  and 1:30 p.m.

After completion of play on Thursday, the number of players will be cut down from 115 to a lower number for the third round on Friday and the final round on Saturday, Allen said.
