Despite the annual Robert “Bob” Mims Miss-Lou Patriotic Golf Tournament being rescheduled to Saturday after its original date in late June, participation is still looking up, tournament director G. Mark LaFrancis said.
The four-man scramble — sponsored by the nonprofit organization Home for Heroes — is set for a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. at Duncan Park.
“We have a good number of teams,” LaFrancis said. “It is about average with where we usually are.”
LaFrancis — who is the president of Home with Heroes — said since the rescheduling, all sponsors and preregistered participants will be retained for Saturday.
While the fourth-annual tournament is set for an untraditional month, LaFrancis said it seemed to have worked out.
“We will raise more (money) with this rescheduled tournament,” he said.
Funds raised through Home with Heroes are used to benefit and help veterans from around the area. LaFrancis said since the tournament is its biggest fundraiser during the year, the extra money will definitely help.
LaFrancis said Home with Hereos’ largest project this year is called Helping Hands for Veterans. The project aims to aid local veterans with home repairs, lawn work and an assortment of other handyman tasks.
“We have six veterans for this project so far and the list is growing,” LaFrancis said. “Anything from trimming bushes to painting windows, fixing ramps and doors. It’s a variety of things they can’t do or can’t afford to do. With this, we have funds to purchase the materials to do everything.”
LaFrancis said additional funds will be used toward the veteran scholarship fund at the Natchez campus of Copiah-Lincoln Community College, as well as for care packages to be shipped overseas to military members.
Cost for a corporate team is $400 and one player is $75. Sign-up is open through the morning of the tournament.
Refreshments and lunch will be served, and there will be door prizes and auction items. Corporate team prizes and on-course prizes will also be available.
