WCCA looks to bounce back on road against ASC

After last Friday night’s 49-8 loss at Adams County Christian School, Wilkinson County Christian Academy head coach Mac Newcomb said he felt like his players were intimidated by the size and speed of ACCS.
This week, the Rams will attempt to rise to the challenge as they travel to Liberty to take on the Amite School Center Rebels, who are led by former WCCA head coach Christopher McGraw.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Friday.
“Coaching with him the last two years, it will be different (seeing him on the opposing sideline),” Newcomb said about McGraw. “It will be fun and it will be competitive. But I look forward to it.”
Both WCCA (0-4) and Amite School Center (2-2) are coming off lopsided losses to MAIS Class AAA teams in Natchez. The Rebels lost to the Cathedral Green Wave last week, 49-14.
“We’ve got to get better fundamentally every week. Just fundamental football — blocking and tackling — nothing fancy,” Newcomb said. “Last week we looked like we regressed instead of progressing. I understand why there are (classifications). They (ACCS) looked like they had college players on their team.”
As for the biggest challenge the Rebels present, Newcomb said their physicality stands out the most.
“They have a good quarterback who’s tough and hard to tackle. From what I’ve seen, they’re competitive.
“Any time WCCA plays Amite School Center, it’s a war. It’s always a hard-fought game,” he said. “It’s bragging rights for the rest of the year. Hopefully, our players can rise to the occasion and get the adrenaline going and play hard-nosed football.”
