A charter bus driving to Birmingham, Ala., with Alcorn State University football players aboard crashed with another vehicle Thursday afternoon.
Alcorn sports information director Robbie Kleinmuntz said while the first of its three buses was merging from U.S. 61 North onto the eastbound lane of I-20, an SUV got caught in between.
“It was like they couldn’t decide whether to speed up to get by us, or slow down to let us by,” he said. “The car got caught in between, and they just couldn’t go anywhere.”
Kleinmuntz said there were no injuries, yet both parties sustained vehicle damage.
“Their car was totaled,” he said. “I think one of the bumpers of the bus came off. The car should have moved over but there wasn’t really anything they could do.”
The Alcorn football team and the rest of the traveling staff, Kleinmuntz said, waited approximately an hour and a half for a new bus to arrive.
The Braves then returned on their route to Birmingham to play Florida International Saturday at Legion Field.
The game was originally scheduled to be played in Miami, Fla. but was moved to a neutral site because of the threat Hurricane Irma is predicted to bring to South Florida over the weekend.
