Adams County Christian School is heading into this week’s matchup at Presbyterian Christian undefeated, but Rebel coach David King said he isn’t letting his team get ahead of itself.
After wins over Central Hinds Academy and St. Aloysius in Week 1 and 2, King said it’s all about balance.
“I feel like we are a little bit ahead of where we thought we would be, and they know we can build the team better than expected, but we try to keep them in check,” he said. “We like to think we have kids that are confident but not too confident.”
With a road game against the MAIS-AAAA Bobcats next on their list, King said the Rebels could experience their toughest matchup yet.
Presbyterian Christian is ranked No. 4 in the latest Associated Press Mississippi Poll for private schools.
“With a team like this on the road, it’ll be a big test for us,” King said. “The stage will be the key. It’s yet to be seen how we handle an environment like that. It can get your attention real quick.”
While ACCS lost multiple playmakers from last year’s squad due to graduation, King said this year’s senior class is developing into a strong unit.
King said throughout recent practices, the Rebels’ nearly 20 seniors have displayed an extraordinary amount of positivity.
“I can sense when senior leadership is strong, and they are doing the little things right,” he said. “It’s been refreshing to the coaches to see a mature bunch that is focused during practice. Even when we have been forced (by rain) into the gym, they have stuck to it.”
While he hopes to keep the good vibes flowing, King wants fans from both teams to know ACCS is ready to compete no matter what.
“I’m always excited to play the big boys,” he said. “I don’t think there’s anybody in their right minds who is picking us to win, but I kind of like to be in that position. We are going to go over there walking off the bus and thinking we have a shot.”
