Jefferson County aims to rebound against Amite County

The Jefferson County High School Tigers will be seeking their first win of the 2017 season Friday when they host the Amite County High School Trojans.
MHSAA Class 3A Jefferson County dropped to 0-2 on the season after falling to Class 5A Natchez High 40-20. Class 2A Amite County fell to 1-1 after losing to Wilkinson County 38-12.
Jefferson County head coach James Herrington said despite the loss there was one area he was particularly pleased with: “Their resilience,” he said. “We missed on a couple of key opportunities, but they continued to fight.”
Unfortunately for the Tigers, there were a couple of areas where Herrington was not so thrilled.
“Turnovers. We had a turnover inside the (NHS) 10-yard line and the 13-yard line. Both were scoring chances. We’ve got to work on that,” he said. “We had key penalties that kept a couple of their drives alive.”
Even though Amite County’s offense was held in check against Wilkinson County, Herrington does not want his team to take the Trojans lightly.
“They have always been a resilient ball club, even when they’re down,” he said. “They have a pretty formidable passing game, and their size up front (concerns me).”
Herrington said a win Friday could go a long way to helping his team get back on the right track.
“Hats off to the two ball clubs that we played (Magee and Natchez High). When we turned the ball over against them, they took advantage of them. We’ve got to do the same,” he said. “Our goal is to get better each week and cut down on the mistakes we make.”
Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
