NATCHEZ — The Cathedral School golf team won its fourth consecutive District 4-1A title Monday on a very windy day at Beau Pré Country Club.

The Green Wave shot a 320 in the district championship tournament to beat Sacred Heart and Bogue Chitto.

The district win qualifies Cathedral for the state tournament on May 9 and 10, also at Beau Pré.

“(This tournament) is a great tune up for state,” Cathedral coach Kurt Russ said. “I am proud of these guys, we tied our lowest score ever.”

“We just need a couple of things to come together, and we’ll be right where we want.”

The Green Wave was led by senior Avery Middleton Monday. Middleton shot a tournament-best 76.

Middleton said he did not hit the ball very well on the front nine and had a couple of three-putts on the back, so his score could have been even lower. But overall he played pretty well, he said.

“Avery Middleton had a great round, especially in this wind,” Russ said.

Cathedral’s Steve Scarborough finished second overall in the tournament with an 80, but he was disappointed with his round, he said.

“(I shot) awful,” Scarborough said. “I don’t know what the problem was. I couldn’t get the speed down on my putts.”

Russ described Scarborough as his No. 1 player, and also said that Scarborough did not have as good a round as the team expected.

“It wasn’t (Scarborough’s) best round, but (it was) not terrible,” Russ said.

Four of the top five golfers in the tournament were from Cathedral.

The Green Wave’s Trevor Farmer finished third in the tournament with an 81, and Kayd Rush finished fifth with an 83.

Semmes White shot a 95 for the Green Wave and finished eighth overall out of 15 golfers.

It was Cathedral’s first tournament at Beau Pré this season, Russ said.

Scarborough said it was good for the team to get a round in at Beau Pré to prepare for the state tournament.

“It’s nice to (play) one competitive tournament here (before state),” Scarborough said.

Farmer said he managed the course all right Monday, but had some bad holes. He said he looks forward to the chance to improve his score in the state tournament.

“It’s nice to have (the state tournament) at home. We have got an advantage. I hope to shoot a little better next time,” Farmer said.
