ALEXANDRIA, La. — Vidalia pitcher Corey Williams had a perfect game going until Bolton changed the story in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Those were the only two good things the Bears could do as Williams had his way on the mound, and Vidalia had its way at the plate in the top of the second inning as the Vikings hammered Bolton 15-1 in five innings Monday afternoon in an LHSAA District 3-3A game.
Williams pitched all five innings for Vidalia. He allowed one run on one hit and a pair of walks and struck out seven batters in what Vikings head coach Tim Herndon called his best outing of the 2011 season.
“He pitched great. He had a good performance. He threw his curveball for strikes. He was spotting his fastball and keeping it away from their hitters. He came through tonight when we really needed one,” Herndon said.
Williams’ perfect game bid was broken up with one out in the bottom of the fifth after he issued a walk. After another one-out walk, Williams struck out the next batter and the no-hit bid was still alive. That was until the next batter for Bolton came to the plate and singled in a run to put an end to the attempted no-hitter and the shutout. Williams struck the next batter to end the game.
Vidalia broke this game wide open with 10 runs in the top of the second inning to go up 11-0. The Vikings added two runs in the top of the third and one run each in the fourth and fifth. They had 16 hits in the game, with eight of them going for doubles.
“It’s a big ball park, Bringhurst Stadium. We hit the ball hard. Hitting’s contagious. It got contagious for a couple of innings,” Herndon said. “We had five doubles in the second inning and that was key.”
Levi Brown had two doubles and went 2-for-2. Vidalia also got doubles from Devin Barnes, Jamal Davis, Seth Hughes, Nate Thomas, Caleb Vines and Heath White.
Williams helped himself at the plate by going 2-for-4. Davis went 2-for-2 while Barnes, Thomas and Vines each were 2-for-3.
Vidalia (6-17, 4-7) hosts Bunkie in its district and regular-season finale Thursday with the junior varsity game at 4 p.m. and the varsity game at 6 p.m.
St. Mary 16, Block 1
NATCHITOCHES, La. — For three and a half innings, the outcome of Monday afternoon’s pivotal game between Block and St. Mary was still very much in doubt.
But in the bottom of the fourth inning, St. Mary put a stop to that in a big way by scoring 11 times to go up 12-1. The Tigers scored four more times in the bottom of the fifth to end this LHSAA District 3-1A match-up by way of the mercy rule.
With the win, top-ranked St. Mary improved to 21-5 overall and 7-0 in district play. The Tigers also locked up the district championship. Block, meanwhile, dropped to 11-12 overall and 3-4 in district play. The Bears are still in third place in District 3-1A.
Block wraps up its regular season on Thursday at home against Montgomery at 4:30 p.m.
